Trash Compactor Catches Fire In Wolfeboro

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

July 31, 2007-(Group 3)     A two- alarm fire on Tuesday morning was contained to a trash compactor outside the town’s transfer station. No injuries were reported during the smoky blaze. Firefighters say they responded to the transfer station on Beach Pond Road shortly after 0545 after an employee of the facility arriving for work alerted them. First- arriving crews found heavy smoke from the building but later discovered fire in the trash compactor attached to a side of the building, according to Deputy Chief Tom Zotti. Zotti said that with help from transfer station staff, firefighters were able to move the compactor- and the fire- away from the building where it was extinguished.

The cause is under investigation by the Wolfeboro Fire- Rescue Department but is not considered suspicious, Zotti said. Firefighters from Tuftonboro, Ossipee Corner, West Ossipee assisted Wolfeboro on the scene.

A garage attached to a single- family home was destroyed but no one was injured during a second- alarm fire in Wolfeboro today. The Wolfeboro Fire- Rescue Department was alerted to a blaze on Eagle Trace at 0134. First-arriving units found heavy fire showing from the garage. All residents were out of the building. Fire crews were able to confine the fire damage to the garage and ell. The rest of the home suffered smoke damage. “We were able to confirm quickly that the residents were out and safe,” said Wolfeboro Fire- Rescue Deputy Chief Tom Zotti. ” Then it became a matter of trying to keep the fire out of the main part of the home. All the firefighters on the scene deserve a lot of credit for limiting the fire damage to the garage area.”

The fire was declared under control at 0320. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Wolfeboro Fire- Rescue Department but is believed to be accidental. Wolfeboro Fire- Rescue was assisted at the scene by Tuftonboro Fire- Rescue, Ossipee Corner Fire- Rescue, Alton Fire- Rescue, West Ossipee Fire- Rescue, Lakeside Ambulance, and the Wolfeboro Police Department.
