April 23, 2008 (Group 1)-
At 10 a.m. in the morning, Engine 2 and Car 1 were called to the scene of a two alarm structure fire that destroyed a home on Robert’s Cove Road in Alton. A warning from a 13-year-old, who noticed smoke funneling out of a window on the second floor while standing in the backyard, enabled the two people to escape the house, with the family dog in tow, minutes before flames started shooting up from the roof. At about 11 a.m. Rescue 1 was called in for the cascade. The house, however, became a complete loss when the flames reached a propane tank affixed to the left side of the house, causing an explosion that set two vehicles parked in the driveway on fire, as well. After investigating the scene with the state Fire Marshal once the blaze had been brought under control, Fire Chief Alan Johnson explained that the fire was caused by an undetermined origin. For the time being, the family has moved in with her son, who lives across the street from what remains of her former home.

Sprinkler System Saves Jo Greens

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

March 30, 2008 (Group 1)- At 2011 Ladder 1 and Engine 1 were dispatched for incoming Box 411. Upon arrival they found a  fire at Jo Greens restaurant which was quickly extinguished by the sprinkler system before it could spread to the rest of the building .The Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue Department was alerted last Sunday to a small fire at the restaurant by the building’s fire alarm system. Jo Greens is located at 33 Dockside in a building that also houses Wolfeboro Bay Real Estate, Winni Paw Station (a pet food and accessory store), and the temporary offices of Great Waters Bank. First-arriving units found the sprinkler system activated. An investigation revealed a compressor motor in a walk-in cooler had malfunctioned, causing a small fire. Heat from the fire activated a sprinkler head in the cooler, which extinguished the fire prior to arrival of the Fire-Rescue Department, according to Deputy Chief Tom Zotti. “This is a prime example of the benefits of a sprinkler system,” Zotti said. “The system worked, the fire was putout, no members of the public or firefighters were injured, and fire damage was at a minimum.”The restaurant is located on the second floor of the building. The blaze caused significant water damage to the first floor. The restaurant was not open for business at the time. “While there was still some damage to the building, it was minor compared to what it might have been without the sprinkler system,”Zotti said. By 10 a.m. on Monday morning the water, fallen ceiling tiles and damp rug shad been removed. Wolfeboro Bay Real Estate was open in its rear office in the building but Winni Paw Station will be closed for two weeks, according to owner Diane Tremblay. The loss from water damage had yet to be assessed at press time. Article from the Granite State News 4/3/2008.  http://www.newhampshirelakesandmountains.com/pdf/GSN.2008.04.03.pdf
